WWII German Army Helmets (1939-45)
The German Army helmet of the Second World War was very similar to its WW1 predecessor, the Stahlhelm, proving the success of Dr Shwerd's 1915 design. In 1934 the German Army High Command ordered development of a new helmet.
The flared visor and skirt were made smaller and projections eliminated. The edges of were rolled, creating a smooth edge and a new leather liner greatly improved the wearer's safety, adjustability, and comfort. When issued, the new M1935 helmet was more compact, lighter and more comfortable, and millions were produced until its replacement in 1940.
Wartime economies forced the introduction of the M1942, which used less steel and was less finished. The final wartime version was the M1945, which are very rare.
After the end of WWII, the Stahlhelm underwent further development in East Germany and the Chilean army now has a new version of the Stahlhelm, the Modelo 2007, which closely resembles the M1942.
