WWI German Army Helmets (1914-18)
THe World War I German Army helmet is much in demand as it's 90 years since the cessation of hostilities. The 'Stahlhelm' (steel helmet) replaced the traditional leather Pickelhaube in 1916. At the start of the war neither side wore any kind of head protection apart from leather or cloth caps. As trench warfare developed, casualties increased dramatically largely due to artillery shrapnel, forcing both sides to develop steel head protection.
Developed in 1915 by Dr. Friedrich Shwerd of the Technical Insitute of Hanover, the first Stahlheim were issued to troops in New Year 1916, which is why it's usually referred to as the "Model 1916". The distinctive 'coalscuttle' shape was carried through in later models which are named for their year of introduction - i.e. the M42 was issued in 1942.
