The Pickelhaube German Army Helmet
The spiked Pickelhaube (from the German Pickel = "point" and Haube = "bonnet")is the most distinctive German army helmet. It was designed in 1842 by Frederick William IV of Prussia and is similar to Russian army headgear of the same period. The spike was originally a holder for a horsehair plume. It was first used by Prussian infantry and quickly taken up by other German principalities.
The Pickelhaube was made of boiled leather with a glossy black finish and metal trim and spike. Apart from the spike, the most notable decoration was the front plate that bore the arms of the regiment's province or state, te most common being the Prussian eagle. Different designs were used by other German States.
It was worn at the start of the First World War (1914-1918) but its leather construction proved ineffectual in the trench warfare that developed and it was soon replaced by the Stahlhelm, the steel 'coal-scuttle' helmet.
